Dust mites thrive in warm, humid conditions, making our mattresses an ideal place for them to live and breed. They feed on the 28g of skin cells that we shed each month and each live mite can produce 20 allergenic droppings a day.
Dust mite feces are easily inhaled, triggering allergies.
Moving around in bed disturbs the faeces particles, which can then stay airborne for at least 30 minutes. Measuring as small as 0.3 microns in size, they can easily be inhaled. Many people don't realise that they could be suffering from allergies triggered by dust mite faeces.
Dyson microbiology lab
13 years ago Dyson built an in-house microbiology laboratory. Inside, Dyson scientists analyse household allergens and have dust mite farms where they breed house dust mite cultures.
This enables Dyson microbiologists to study and fully understand dust mite behaviour and the allergens they produce.
Through their research, Dyson microbiologists have discovered a highly effective way to reduce dust mite allergens in mattresses. It's not the UV lights or vibrating pads used by other manufacturers - it's powerful suction.
UV light is ineffective
Other mattress cleaners claim that their UV lights kill dust mites, but this isn't the case. To have any chance of killing dust mites, Dyson microbiologists found that UV lights would have to be held over a single spot for approximately 60 seconds. And even then, it would only work if the dust mites were stationary on the surface of the mattress - which they're not.
Vibration is ineffective
Some mattress cleaners claim that their vibrating pads shake and remove dust mites from mattresses, but this also isn't the case. Dust mites hook their legs around mattress fibres at least 10-20mm below the surface. Small vibrating pads in other cleaners are often too weak to dislodge them. Even if they are dislodged, the cleaner's suction would be too weak to remove them from the mattress.
